While not entirely bad, Night Terrors is certainly never more than mediocre. As seems to be an almost standard excuse behind many of Tobe Hoopers failures, the film suffered from budget cuts that necessitated drastic curtailing of its plot and the originally planned 1920s period locale. It starts out promisingly. Zoe Trilling, although not much of an actress, looks right for the part of the innocent naively drawn by her own nascent sexuality into a series of dangerous games; the Israel locations are interestingly exotic; and Hooper even directs some moderately erotic lovemaking scenes. Unfortunately, despite pretensions otherwise, Night Terrors is never anything more than a standard corruption of the innocent story. All the flashbacks to Robert Englund as the Marquis de Sade, the hint that Zoe Trilling may be a reincarnation of his lover, the running subplot about her fathers uncovering of the Gnostic tomb have nothing whatsoever to do with the main story. All these distractions do is turn an ordinary erotic thriller into something pretentious. Perhaps most confusing of all is the ending where the Gnostics appear and are able by some means to cause Robert Englund to die by holding up the sets of scales they carry. What the significance of this is could be anybodys guess the film never deigns to explain. They just appear out of nowhere, seem to supernaturally cause him to bleed to death and then vanish again without any explanation. Perhaps the worst aspect of Night Terrors is the casting of Robert Englund who was then still regarded as a hot genre name on the basis of his role as Freddy Krueger in the A Nightmare on Elm Street films. For all the cult appeal he found among the Elm Street enthusiasts, Robert Englund is a terrible actor. Here he plays the dual role of de Sade and his descendant all in a high camp performance. Camp is perhaps an intriguing interpretation and when one thinks about, quite appropriate to de Sade but Englunds performance is simply awful. The opening moments with Englund as de Sade being whipped and yelling Perhaps you should soak the lash in vinegar as encouragement and then having acid poured in his eye are more hysterical than horrific, or for that matter even provocative.
